Up until the late 1970’s, women didn’t have any type of active wear or athletic gear that was made specifically for the female body. Women had no choice but to wear clothes designed for male bodies on the athletic field. In 1977, the first sports bra was made by two women, Hinda Miller and Lisa Landahl, who cut up a pair of jockstraps and sewed them together into a bra. They marketed it as the Jogbra. This was the first piece of athletic wear designed to address a woman's unique physiology and the beginning of a women’s athletic revolution.
Over the past few decades women have made their mark in the athletic world and have all the women’s gear to prove it. Today, more and more sportswear and gear manufacturers are studying the female form and the way it moves to provide women with improved gear and clothing for any occasion or sport. Women’s gear has allowed women to enjoy physical activities and sports more providing more comfort since it is designed to be used by the female gender.
In addition to comfort, women’s athletic attire is much more flattering on women than men’s, obviously. Now days, women have just as much athletic wear as men, from shoes and shorts to gloves and goggles. Women no longer have to settle for wearing men’s that doesn’t fit properly and is not nearly as attractive. Women’s attire is contoured to fit the female figure and celebrate the natural curves women are blessed with.
Another reason why women’s gear has changed the world of athletics for women is the fact that they are made to optimize women’s technique and performance based on their unique physiology. When you use gear designed for your body type, it helps you to reach your maximum potential as well as making the activity much more enjoyable.
Women’s cycling gear has made biking much more enjoyable for the fairer sex. Before women’s bikes were made, women had to use bikes made specifically for men. Men’s bikes are very uncomfortable for women to ride because women’s bodies are shaped much different. Women’s bike frames are designed to fit women with the average height of 5’5”, making them much easier to get on and off the bike. Saddles, handle bars and peddles are also adjusted to fit the female form much better. You can find custom moutain bikes or cycling gear online.
Same goes for women’s fitness gear, golf equipment and skateboard decks. Female-specific attire and gear make all the difference. Style, comfort and performance are all enhanced, making women feel strong, attractive and physically able to enjoy the same activities men do.
